SNOW ------- Written in February 1936                         SNOW
Tune: “Spring in a Pleasure Garden”                 to the tune of Spring Beaming in Garden
(一九三六年二月) by Mao Zedong

See what the northern countries show: What a scene in the north found!
Hundreds of leagues ice-bound go; A thousand li in the earth is ice-clad aground.
Thousands of leagues flies snow.  Ten thousand li of the sky is snow-bound.
Behold! Within and without the Great Wall  Behold! At both sides of the Great Wall
惟余莽莽;               The boundless land is clad in white, An expanse of whiteness conquers all;
And up and down the Yellow River, all In the Yellow River, up and down,
顿失滔滔;               the endless waves are lost in sight.  The surging waves are gone!
Mountains like silver serpents dancing. Like silver snakes the mountains dance,
Highlands like waxy elephants advancing.  Like wax elephants the high-lands bounce.
All try to match the sky in height. All try to be higher than heaven even once!
Wait till the day is fine  Come, when the day is fine and bright,
And see the fair bask in sparkling sunshine, How you’ll be enamoured of the beautiful sight.
What an enchanting sight!  To view the land adorned in red and white.

Our motherland so rich in beauty  With so much beauty is the land endowed.
Has made countless heroes vie to pay her their duty. So many heroes thus in homage bowed.
But alas! Qin Huang and Han Wu The first king of Qin and the fifth king of Han,
略输文采;               In culture not well bred.  Neither was a true literary man;
And Tang Zong and Song Zu The first king of Song and the second king of Tang,
In letter not well read.  Neither was noted for poetry or song.
And Genghis Khan, proud son of Heaven  Even the Proud Son of Heaven, for a time,
成吉思汗,               for a day,  Called Genghis Khan, in his prime,
Knew only shooting eagle by bending his bows.       Knowing only shooting eagle, over his tent with a bow so bent.
They have all passed away;  Alas, all no longer remain!
Brilliant heroes are those  For truly great men,
whom we will see today! One should look within this age’s ken.
